GEOKLOCK was hired to conduct the location feasibility studies for a new industrial site in the automotive segment in the city of Resende, state of Rio de Janeiro.
Following the completion of preliminary studies, the state environmental agency (INEA) issued the site an installation permit. Additional environmental studies were then conducted for the existing pond (known as the Turfeira Lagoon) and for the Paraíba do Sul River.
These areas were the object of special attention, with various specific tasks, including:
- A study to identify the lagoon’s Margin Alignment Plan, to support the official definition of the water body’s protective buffer strip;
- A survey of the lagoon’s contribution area;
- A study of the lagoon’s elevation-area-volume curve;
- The design of a dam for the drainage canal;
- A hydrological study of the Paraiba do Sul River;
- Studies on palynological potential and the lagoon’s water biota (ichthyofauna, benthic community and water flora), herpetofauna, and avifauna.
Each study provided significant input to support the engineering design for plant construction, as well as for the better understanding of the local water dynamics and of the actual environmental impact of the project.
The integrated environmental assessment of the studies defined the guidelines for the future creation of a Conservation Unit – the Turfeira Lagoon wildlife preservation area –, as per the terms agreed upon in the Terms of Reference entered with the environmental agency.
GEOKLOCK coordinated and carried out all efforts, with the support of experts of the Rio de Janeiro National Museum. GEOKLOCK also was responsible for the liaison with, and gave technical support to, the attorneys involved in the development of the proceedings and of the Record of Decision entered into by the plant and the Federal Public Prosecution Service [MPF].
